SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging) and laser altimeter are active electro-optical techniques using an ultra-shot pulse laser. SLR is the most accurate satellite ranging technique for space geodesy, geophysics and precise orbit determination. The technique measures the round trip time of photons to satellites equipped with the laser retro-reflector array (LRA), which provides the range measurements with mm level precision. On the other hand, laser altimeter provides surface slope and roughness as well as range through measurements of returned pulse width and reflectivity. Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing one mobile and one fixed SLR system since 2008, called ARGO-M and ARGO-F, respectively. In addition, KASI has a plan to develop a laser altimeter to support lunar and planetary exploration mission. In this seminar, SLR and laser altimeter will be presented for space applications of active electro-optical systems.
